Biography

After completing my MA in Ensemble Physical Theatre where I studied improvisation, pre-expressive and psychophysical actor training, I continued to research and develop my professional practice by attending residential performance training workshops at; Au Brana Cultural Centre in France, Brzezinka (Grotowski forest base), Poland , Whitestone Arts, UK and one to one dance lessons with dancer/choreographer Ruth Jones. In July 2013 I was  attended an open research residential workshop at Au Brana Cultural Centre in France which focused on the exploration of embodying Shakespeare- I have since attended numerous workshops with OBRA as well as undertaking 18 months of training in biomechanics with Chloe Whitehead of Proper Job Theatre.

I lived at Whitestone Arts having spent various residential professional development and research/rehearsal periods at the centre. I first started to go to Whitestone Arts after graduating from my MA in Ensemble Physical Theatre at The University of Huddersfield in 2010 for the development and rehearsal process of The Shattering Man with DUENDE. I lived and still assist with the marketing, catering and general organisation/development of Whitestone Arts. I became an associate performer of DUENDE, (international physical ensemble est. 2010 by Artistic Director, John Britton) in 2010 and since The Shattering Man I have assisted John Britton on one of his ensemble improvisation workshops at the Buddhist Arts Centre in London and performed in Collision#1, Mytiline, Greece, after a three week residential in Fara. The residential workshop in Fara incorporated an outdoor/installation performance with workshop participants for the local community.

In May 2011 I also assisted on DUENDE’s collaboration with first year performance and technical students from The University of Huddersfield on Re:Occupation. We worked with the students to create various installation performances, taking over the whole of the Drama department.

As an associate of Whitestone Arts, I have collaborated as a performer/movement deviser for Crossing the Line. This is a short multimedia physical performance that we performed for ‘Unbounded Moor: A Symposium on Landscape and Literature’. The symposium took place in Haworth, under the auspices of the Brontë Parsonage Museum and Ilkley Literature Festival and was repeated for the Pennine Prospects/Natural England conference; ‘National Character Areas Profiles in practice’ at Hebden Bridge, 2013. As part of the development of this piece I acted as a mentor for two work placement students from Leeds City College in Keighley to research the experience of walking at Top Withens and the Bronte Waterfalls alongside Artist/Photographer, Simon Warner and Playwright/Dramatist, Judith Adams. This was performed at Whitestone Arts for Dancer/choreographer Margie Gillis and choreographer Ruth Jones. Both gave feedback me feedback to develop the piece further and was performed for a third time in Hebden Bridge as part of a Pennine Prospects conference.

I have also continued to develop my collaborative practice of using movement with language with Judith Adams and acted as the performer on an R&D during a Whitestone Arts project commissioned by Opera North.  This has since developed into performance project Arashi no ei (Stormy House) and in May 2017 we conducted a 16 day research trip to Japan for funded by ACE Artist International Development Fund, Diawa and Sasakawa.  In Japan I was able to take workshops in Butoh at the Kazuo Ohno Dance Studio in Tokyo, lead by Yoshiko Ohno and with Ima Tenko.

Alongside been a performer and co-directing my own company, Six Lips Theatre, I am also a freelance acting training facilitator specialising in physical performance and improvisation and have led workshops at Greenhead College, Huddersfield and assisted on performance making and improvisation modules at The University of Huddersfield. Since 2011.   I have been teaching in further education, starting as a Part Time Lecturer at Craven College, Skipton teaching Performing Arts and acting as the Course Tutor for the first year BTEC Level 3 Extended National Diploma course from 2012-2013. I started teaching part time at East Riding College in 2013 and became head of Performing Arts until 2015.

In 2015 until the present, I have been facilitating on a freelance basis alongside performance work at CAPA college  (www.capacollege.com), a specialist collage training 16-18year olds through both A Level and BTEC Extended Diploma’s.
